Reiterhof: animal-assisted education in Austria
Pedagogic animal contact on the farm
Animal-assisted education in Austria, which is animal-supported work or animal contact on the farm, describes the specific use of farm animals for educational purposes. We foster intense animal contact in combination with basic agricultural activities and processes on our pedagogic farm Reiterhof of the Rohrmoser family in St Johann.
Certified ÖKL-operation for animal pedagogics
We’ve been a certified ÖKL-operation (ÖKL is the Austrian Council for Agricultural Engineering and Rural Development) since 2012. In order to achieve this status, we had to complete additional educational qualifications and meet specific criteria. These include:
- Successful completion of an LFI (Institute for Further Training) course
- Proper farm animal keeping in accordance with organic regulations
- Continuously reviewed animal health
- Obtaining the safety badge from the social insurance body of farmers
- Selected, trained and ÖKL-inspected farm animals
Enduring moments of joy
Animal education focuses on the promotion of spiritual, mental and physical health and well-being, in accordance with learning and education.
Children experience moments of joy with friendly, trained animals during various exercises. Animal partners are reliable and do not judge children; they rejoice in genuine, loving contact and give calmness and a basic sense of trust to young visitors allowing them to master all sorts of challenges – be they of physical, emotional or mental nature – more easily.
